Sweet Georgia!

Is it just me, or does the international outcry against Russia's invasion of South Ossetia seem kind of muted?  I mean, Russia is essentially just flexing its muscles, saying "dibs" and taking over.  I understand that the Olympics are going to dominate the news, but given how much grief China's gotten in the 50 years since it moved into Tibet, shouldn't we be hearing a lot more from outraged politicians, celebrities and activist groups?  Imagine what it'd be like if China tried to annex northern Thailand or something.

Oh yeah, Russia's now threatening to launch a nuclear attack on Poland too.

Dude I think you need to check some facts on the South Ossetia situation first:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_ossetia

First excerpt:

"A part of it has been de facto independent from Georgia since it declared independence[1] as the Republic of South Ossetia early in the 1990s during the Georgian-Ossetian conflict."

Second excerpt:

"By August 2008 more than 70% of the South Ossetia citizens had Russian citizenship."

The last one is uncited, but my Belarussian colleague mentioned that post-Georgian conflict Russia openly offered citizenship to anyone who wanted one in South Ossetia. Seeing as he lived there he probably knows.

So obviously the U.S. is skewing things (and you don't see that type of political cartoon about Iraq now do you?) and the Russian news is distorting it a little as well. But I think it would be fair to objectively state that Georgia has long been the aggressor in this region.

p.s. I realize that saying "facts" and then following up with a Wikipedia link is definitely lame, but it is as "objective" a source as I could find on the fly.
